What They Don’t Tell You About Pregnancy – Dhillondeeds 

Hello and welcome back to my blog. Today we talking PREGNANCY! and what they don’t usually tell you. Symptoms like fatigue, constant peeing, hunger, mood swings, aches and pains are all considered “normal” when it comes to pregnancy so nobody is too surprised when you complain.

I thought I knew what was to come but little did I know that there are in fact many more fruitful delights that comes along with the joyful news of conception that woman don’t talk about! I guess most woman want to focus on the good rather than the negative – completely reasonable – a little heads up would have been appreciated though!

But don’t you worry, I got you! Here are some of the things I’ve experienced so far that I didn’t expect.


Everyone knows about “morning sickness” during pregnancy but the reason I’ve added this to “things they don’t tell you” is because no one really explains the extend of nausea during pregnancy! It’s not just the quick run to the toilet we often see in movies, it’s horrendous, it’s painful and it’s paralysing- to say the least. I didn’t experience much morning sickness during my first trimester but when I did it was usually “at the night” and I would cry and break out into sweats and get lightheaded. In my second trimester I experienced this twice and now in my third, only once so far.


Apparently a common problem during pregnancy too. Something I most definitely did not know about before I conceived and also something I hardly experienced before. And it’s got to do with the increasing amount of hormones in our bodies (not surprising ) during pregnancy that relaxes muscles in our digestive tract making food pass through slower (thank you google) I just do my best to eat as much fibre as I can as well as drink water because being constipated is painful and uncomfortable and not healthy!

Loss of hair

Very unusual I know because in most cases woman report having amazing hair during their pregnancy – but I wasn’t that lucky. I loss chunks of my hair during my first trimester. The shine and glow is there now but I still experience hair loss when I wash my hair. I guess my body just reacted differently to the increased hormones. Another thing that could have contributed to my hair loss was the fact that I had and still do have low vitamin D readings. So it’s very important to make sure you are eating correctly and getting enough sunlight.

Bleeding gums

I for one was definitely not expecting my gums to bleed. But like everything else, pregnancy hormones can make your gums swell and become inflamed causing them to bleed when you brush your teeth and sometimes randomly throughout the day too. I’ve always had good dental reports and I did not experience any dental hygiene problems before so it was very shocking the first time I spat blood after I brushed my teeth but my doctor reassured me that it was a symptom of pregnancy and not to worry too much. It makes it really hard to eat at times as well but like everything else changing in your body you learn to live with it.


For the first time in my life I woke up in a pool of drool – it was so embarrassing! I also found at times salivating like a dog at the though of food LOL but again perfectly normal, during your pregnancy you will probably find yourself salivating a lot more, yip – so don’t be too alarmed. It’s usually associated with morning sickness and nausea and for me it only lasted during my first trimester – thank heavens!


I did not get “good” skin during my pregnancy. My skin has just broken out in all sorts of pimples. Apparently acne is completely normal during pregnancy too because of the increased hormones – a dollar for every time I mention hormones, maybe? I’ve managed to keep the breakouts down by washing my face regularly and not applying too much products on it BUT there’s good days and bad days and we just take it as it comes.

Nose bleeds

I won’t lie, I freaked out a bit the first time it happened but – hormones. Pregnancy can cause the blood vessels in your nose to expand causing them to rupture more easily. I’ve found also that nose bleeds could be a side effect of my pregnancy vitamins too but you’ve got to take your vitamins!


I experienced really painful headaches during my first trimester. It’s not a common symptom of pregnancy but fatigue, stress and hunger can contribute to the development of headaches. My first trimester was really difficult I was always tired and didn’t have much of an appetite, so it’s not surprising that I experienced a lot of tension headaches but as I progressed throughout my pregnancy and learnt how to deal properly with all the changes my body was going through both mentally and physically which as help relieve a lot of unnecessary stress. I haven’t experienced much lately, but there’s the odd one occasionally. The best thing you can do is just have a lie down and relax.

Leg cramps

Definitely another one I was not aware of.  Oh gosh, these painful spasms radiate through  your calves and up your legs – it can happen during the day but for me it happens especially at night. The pain brings me to tears every time. I’ve experience these throughout my pregnancy. Not sure if it’s just the extra weight I am carrying around or the infamous pregnancy hormones but hopefully it will stop once baby has arrived. I’ve tested every trick to help cope and relieve my legs from the pain but I’ve found that stretching before bed and eating bananas helps a lot to prevent the cramps.


Your pregnancy supplements will probably make you feel worse! Everyone in my circle have confirmed this!  I couldn’t before and I still can’t stomach my prenatal vitamins – the thought of taking it alone frightens me. It makes me feel nauseous, I get excruciating headaches, extreme fatigue and nose bleeds. To be honest, I’ll probably let my vitamins take all the blame for the negative symptoms of pregnancy! For the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy I took it every day, after that every second day and then only twice a week – but I did however follow a strict eating plan to supplement all the vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy pregnancy. Now that I’m in my third trimester I am taking it more regularly everyday again with the addition vitamin D and iron supplements too because I am anemic and vitamin D deficient – odd since I live in a country with an all year round supply of sun, right? But that’s a blog post on its own.

Baby kicks/movements

It’s amazing to feel your baby move for the first time – it’s just little cute butterfly feelings-but as they get bigger and stronger it’s not that pleasant anymore – it makes me feel sick – like nauseatingly sick.  It becomes uncomfortable and sometimes sore. And if you have a little night owl like we have then those kicks and movements will keep you up at night too. It makes falling asleep a lot harder. My favourite position to sleep is laying on my right hand side but that’s when she kicks and moves the most so I’ve had to learn to sleep on my left side for a more restful sleep. Brighter note, it’s comforting knowing that she’s still active and healthy.
